Default Mode Network
A distinct network of structures, called the default mode network (DMN), is active in the brain when the mind wanders (Gusnard & Raichle, 2001; Hasenkamp & Barsalou, 2012).
The DMN was identified from brain scans, and it appears that most of the brain structures in the DMN are located down the midline of the brain from the front to the back.
The DMN is primarily engaged when we're left alone to think-remembering the past, envisioning the future, and taking the per- spective of others (Buckner, Andrews-Hanna, & Schacter, 2008).
DMN activity also consists of self-referential thinking: "What hap- pened to me in the past?
